La Marigalante: The Pirate Ship of Adventure and Tradition in Puerto Vallarta

By Tribune Travel

June 19, 2025

If Puerto Vallarta is the jewel of the Mexican Pacific, then the Marigalante is its crown, an iconic floating masterpiece that combines pirate lore, culinary flair, and spectacular showmanship. A dream built over seven years and steeped in maritime history, this authentic Carrack-style galleon welcomes guests aboard for unforgettable adventures both day and night.

Sunset Pirate Cruise

Each evening, the Marigalante sets sail from the Malecón at sunset, inviting guests into an exhilarating world of swashbuckling and pageantry. Onboard performances burst into life with acrobatic sword fights, live music that urges you onto the decks, and aerial stunts that keep every watcher enchanted. Dine on gourmet selections—salmon, tuna, octopus, ribs, chicken, or beef—while enjoying an open bar under the stars. The evening culminates in a breathtaking fireworks display over the Bay, a finale that seals the night in magic.

Tierra de Piratas – Day Tour

If you prefer daylight adventures, I recommend you climb aboard for the “Tierra de Piratas” day tour, exploring the crystalline Majahuitas cove. By land, conquer banana boats, kayaks, and beach volleyball; by sea, plunge into snorkeling and treasure hunts. A sensational pirate show punctuates the day’s excitement before returning at day’s end with spirits and full hearts.

Craftsmanship & History

The Marigalante is a voyage of cultural tribute, a global odyssey and a living monument. Built from 1980 to 1987 by the “Mar, Hombre y Paz” association, this 330-ton vessel spans 50 meters in length and boasts three masts towering 12, 18, and 23 meters high. Crafted from thirty tropical woods—like mahogany, cedar, guayacán, and palo rosa—it’s a testament to celebration, craftsmanship, and cultural tribute.  The Marigalante’s maiden voyage in 1987 traced historic shipping routes, visiting Spanish ports. It also sailed to Japan to mark a century of commercial ties with Mexico and later retraced the cacao route to Ecuador and Spain for the 500th anniversary of the New World’s discovery. To date, it’s braved 87 ports and 52,000 nautical miles, enough to circle the Earth twice, paying homage to peace and pre-Columbian heritage.

Special Offer

And here’s the pirate’s treasure: the Marigalante is currently offering 50% off its regular tours; an irresistible deal to embark on this living legend and witness the bay from its most spectacular vantage. The Marigalante it’s a must-experience because it blends entertainment, culture, and adventure seamlessly. It’s not just a cruise, it’s a cultural landmark, a floating theater, and an immersive history lesson all rolled into one unique experience.
